Campaign

To become a responsible business, Kebun Kumara feels the need to dedicate efforts in initiating campaign that strengthens collective actions towards a shared issue.

Jakarta sends more than 7,000 tons of trash to Bantargebang landfill every day. Moving trash from one location to another does not eliminate the problem of pollution, it simply relocates the mess. Our initiatives hope to offer a solution that fills in the gap amidst our current reality of overconsumption, pollution and inadequate waste management.

Kompos Kolektif (KK x Magalarva)

Realizing the urgency to address our alarming trash problem, we aim to facilitate optimal waste management directly from its source : the home.

Around at least 3 kg of weekly household food waste are sent to landfills where it releases dangerous gas that pollute the environment and threaten our collective health. Understanding that not all households can or are willing to compost, we propose an alternative to keep their food waste out of landfills.

In collaboration with Magalarva, we provide weekly pick-up services of household food waste to be processed at Magalarva’s facility, where it will be composted with the help of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens).

In 2022, Kompos Kolektif received sponsorship from Bank DBS Indonesia, allowing our services to expand to five locations across Jabodetabek. By the end of 2023, we have served 278 households, with 121 tons of food waste saved from landfills, part of which were transformed into 13,000 kg of compost.

About our partner Magalarva is the fastest growing Black Soldier Fly protein producing company based in Indonesia. They bring organic sidestream back into the food system by bio-converting them into high quality products using Black Soldier Fly larvae. Visit their website to learn more about their business.

Through our collaboration with Rekosistem, we invite everyone to bring bring their own cardboard box (#BawaKardusmukuKeDus) and stop contributing waste to the landfill (#BerhentiBuangSampahkeTPA). Once collected, it will be delivered by Reksosistem to their respective recycling partners to be reprocessed and salvaged for future use.

No Pollution Resolution 2019

A forest for the city! In 2019, we decided to involve volunteers in collectively fighting against pollution by growing our Kumara Urban Forest. Trees are the natural climate solution. Particulate matter pollution decreases by 24% and temperature can drop up to 2°C in areas surrounded by trees. Sadly, our city is greatly deprived of them.

With the help of funds donated from #EverythinginBetween (a 15,000 km bike-ride by Diego and Marlies from the Netherlands to Jakarta), we decided to grow a bunch of trees within an urban food forest. Designed using the Syntropic Farming method, our event gathered volunteers to help us prepare a 300 sqm patch of land previously used as an illegal dump site in Pulau Situ Gintung to be transformed into a sustainable, productive food forest. With the help of our 12 volunteers, we were able to prepare the forest floor within six days and commenced with planting our trees in mid 2020. #WeTheForest #KumaraUrbanForest

No Pollution Resolution 2018

In 2018, we collaborated with The Street Store Indonesia to collect not only recyclable used-products but also used clothing to be distributed to those in need. Without most people realizing, a part of society faces a clothing-crisis, whereby they don’t have access or means to acquire decent clothing for their day-to-day activity.

Our collaboration with The Street Store Indonesia aimed to gather a supply of worthy-secondhand clothes to be redistributed for further use. This campaign aimed to highlight how some of our used items can still be of benefit when given to the right hands, instead of the dumpster. Unexpectedly, the campaign also became a donation pool for the natural disaster and tsunami that struck Banten dan Lampung within the same month. We were able to play a role as a donation drop-off point for those hit the hardest. #BarterSampahDenganBibit #PeduliSampahPeduliBumi

No Pollution Resolution 2017

In 2017, we launched #BarterSampahDenganBibit as our first #NoPollutionResolution campaign with Daur.id as our recycling partner. This campaign encouraged seeing waste as having value from its potential to be reprocessed. By giving sunflowers in exchange, this campaign generated a lot of excitement from participants of all ages – highschool students, newly weds, mothers and grandmothers.
